Teach by Dennis Dinoia, also known as Mr D, from Mr D Math which gave me ideas on how to teach my kids to become more independent in their learning. It was also encouraging to me to read how some of what we were already doing was successful for others as well, even in traditional classrooms.
I’m not usually one for a Word of the Year but when life took an unexpected turn for the whole world, I knew we would need something special to get us through. The first word that came to mind was NOVELTY.
Our homeschool has always been full of energy and active kids who like to listen to a story for a minute and then are off to do something else. It was hard to keep up. It took awhile to learn that part of the quick pace was that my kids had trouble focusing on their school work. We have learned to adapt, and our normal includes homeschooling with focus challenges.
Take a peek inside our homeschool and see a serious partnership with a full time working mom and a stay-at-home homeschool dad. Yep! Though I help our homeschool by supporting it financially, keeping the house clean (ish), and teaching reading after work hours… my beard growing, plaid wearing, firewood chopping husband is the primary caregiver and teacher of our 4 young children.

Losing my husband in 2019, going from a family of five to a family of four, has been a world of adjustment. Grief is an insanely heavy weight to carry. That’s what I remember the most about all of it in the beginning, the weight of reality.
