Star Wars is a popular theme at our house. The franchise is stories that drive the imaginations of both adults and kids in my house. May 4th has become an all out holiday for us in recent years. The phrase, “May the Force be with you”, has inspired many to celebrate May the Fourth as Star Wars Day because of the similar-sounding phrase. So today we are sharing our favorite Star Wars Day ideas for kids!

Each year our celebration has varied. At the minimum our family must dress for the day, with everyone wearing Star Wars shirts and watch some Star Wars movie together. One year I found myself shopping for a shirt for myself the day before because I was the only one with nothing to wear! It’s a great excuse for an easy dinner plan, since pizza and movie night is our go to on May the 4th. The kids are still a little young for a full day’s marathon, but we did enjoy watching the Mandalorian series all together.

3 Star Wars Day Ideas for Kids you can do at home!

Build a Lightsaber!

This is an easy 30 minute activity and the pool noodles are safe for all ages to battle it out in the backyard. Each child can personalize their own handle to make theirs unique.

  • Gather a pool noodle, Gray Duct Tape, knife and scissors. Black or Colored Duct tape is optional.
  • Cut the pool noodle in half or the desired length with the knife. We found a serrated blade to be most effective for cutting the foam noodle.
  • Trim and shape the raw end of the noodle, this will be the tip of your lightsaber.
  • Use the duct tape to wrap the other end of the noodle, this will be the lightsaber handle. We found wrapping 4 widths of duct tape to be a good length handle.
  • Add stickers or additional colors of duct tape to the handle to personalize it for each Jedi in your family.

Learn to Code with Droid Enginneers!

Code.org offers two different Star Wars coding challenges. Using characters and inspiration from The Force Awakens use visual programming code to complete a series of challenges. For older or mare advanced students there is a JavaScript challenge as well to complete. For the film the Force Awakens, BB-8 was a product of computer science. An entire team of engineers worked together to create the coding for all the movements that give him his great personality. The Hour of Code project culminates in coding your own Star Wars themed game to share with others.

Write Your Star Wars Story!

What our family loves about the Star Wars science fiction world is that it is big enough for them to create their own stories in the universe. One of my kids has his own character he invented whom he calls, “Commander Shadow.”  Commander Shadow is the commander of a Clone trooper team, part of the Jedi army. Take time during your Star Wars celebration to build your own characters and stories and share them with one another.

Another way to include Star Wars in your writing is these handwriting practice pages. You will find Cursive and Print packs in my shop. Below you can download a sample set of pages to get started or head straight to the shop to grab the whole bundle.

No matter how you celebrate Star Wars day I hope you have fun and make memories as a family
