Our family plays a lot of card games and board games. It’s been a great way for our autistic kids to practice social skills and stay with the group in a fun family activity Two of our favorite games inspired Shape Farm, Machi Koro, and Settlers of Catan.
When we had the opportunity to pursue testing for learning disabilities and giftedness, we discovered there was a name for these struggles, dyscalculia. Now they had their own learning disability to fit in with their siblings, who are dyslexic and autistic.
We decided to use it as an opportunity to open her a bank account. We also started looking for a homeschool curriculum for personal finance to help her learn to managing her money well.
But don’t underestimate the value of being flexible and being willing to throw it out and try something completely different. Unlike a traditional school your curriculum, choices only have to be a good fit for your family, and not other people. Each family is different. What your best friend loves may not work for your family, and that doesn’t make you a bad homeschooler!
Math is a hard subject because it’s so important and there are so many options. We have tried a few different programs over the years and have a few favorites. We also have one student with a learning disability in math which affects which programs suit their learning. There are times when each of my students is using a different program for math, because different ones suit their individual needs and strengths.
