Out of the Box Kids don’t fit the standard, “one size fits all” box. They are a little extra, more intense. They play harder and ask more questions. They may carry a special toy longer and hate change. Their brains are wired differently, often due to a learning difference or a disability.
There are some instances where it can be helpful to be homeschooling with an IEP, and there are some pitfalls and downsides that you may run into if you pursue getting one. The value of pursuing a homeschool IEP will vary depending on your circumstances and location.
On adventure days our child takes a backpack. It has many of the sensory tools we have found to help them adapt for their sensory challenges. Having tools available to them empowers them to control the situation and learn to stay calm. We are able to make the best of the environments we encounter.
As we added a child with challenges and eventually another brother, our routine changed. Now our school looks like a one room school house where as many subjects as possible are taught to everyone at the same time.
We have participated in years of Occupational Therapy to learn strategies to improve his fine motor skills and found ways to add practice into our lives naturally.
