This year one of my middle schoolers is using BookShark Virtual Level F Eastern Hemisphere.
We will be taking a look at life on the other side of the world. Unlike most other BookShark levels, Level F is not a chronological study, but is more of a unit study as we travel around the Eastern Hemisphere, exploring countries and cultures very different than our own, such as Japan and China.
I am scheduling BrainPOP Homeschool assignments and activities to match the units and topics we are already covering in our other curriculums this year. Instead of searching the internet for activities to add, I can find everything I need in one easy place, which keeps it simple for both me and my students.
Traveling with Outside the Box kids can be a challenge. There will be lots of unfamiliar when you travel, and that can be especially hard for some kids who crave the sameness and routine of home.
A friend asked me the other day about her child, “He loves to crash and play but can’t calm down very easily when he is hyped up, and he also eats holes in all his shirts. Do you think they could be related?” Before she finished, the memories flooded back of one of my kids at a younger age when I was asking similar questions about them. I’m not an expert, but I am a parent privileged to have met some amazing professionals along the way who have given me insight and clues to understand my very own outside the box kids.
What is a gifted child? It’s easy to say everyone is gifted, and it is true that everyone has strengths and areas in which they shine. But “gifted” is a clinical definition which relates specifically to having an abnormally high intelligence. While at first that can sound wonderful and amazing, it also comes with it’s own set of challenges.
