Every family has their own culture and things that they enjoy doing together. At our house, it’s reading together as a family and sharing stories. Even with two middle schoolers, a highlight of each day is bedtime stories where Dad reads to everyone.
We started using an all in one curriculum until it didn’t work for us anymore. So then we started swapping out different elements: this book was boring to our family, this perspective was too one-sided. The math wasn’t a challenge, or the writing was too rigorous.
. We keep homeschool field trip records of our adventures in a journal each time we do our exploring. This allows us to reflect and process our experiences, practice our narrative writing and create a memory book we can look back at later.
When the weather changes we like to change our homeschool rhythm to make space to enjoy the seasons. We lighten our book based school work to give us time and energy to do other kinds of learning.
Today used that extra space to have some hands on learning outside. We drive by the local university Arboreteum everytime we visit the grandparents, but we never stop. Today was the day to make a stop and explore.
One challenge I have found with studying science this way is finding materials and activities that are interesting for my active learners but also cover the details we are wanting to learn. The Dr. Bonyfide presents: books totally fill the need in a human body homeschool unit study!
