Homeschooling Online with BrainPOP

I’m always on the lookout for quality resources to make homeschooling online easy for me. I look for easy to use and engaging websites that make learning fun and let the kids explore their interests.

Using BrainPOP Homeschool (grades 3-8) for homeschool is an idea I have seen over the years but never really spent time exploring, until now.  When we were first homeschooling for preschool and Kindergarten we would watch BrainPOP Homeschool Jr (grades K-3) free video of the day, but we never signed up for a membership.  I have watched the platform grown and now there is a homeschool membership option and resources for students through 8th grade!

This year I was given the opportunity to use BrainPOP Homeschool Combo (grades K-8) and I am so excited to use it this year.  It has grown and expanded a lot since we first watched those Kindergarten videos with my now 8th grader!  There are resources for Kindergarten through 8th grade and a homeschool membership level that allows you assign your students videos and activities.  I was compensated for my time in addition to receiving a complimentary membership, but the opinions I am sharing are honest and true.

BrainPop for homeschool lets my students explore on their own, making homeschooling online easy.

My kids and I have been exploring the BrainPOP Homeschool Combo membership which gives me access to both BrainPOP Jr and BrainPOP content to assign to my students, and the students have access to both sites as well to explore on their own.  The Combo membership is the best option for us as my students fit into both age groups of videos.  My youngest can access the BrainPOP Homeschool Jr (grades K-3) content as a 3rd grader and my older kids have access to the BrainPOP Homeschool (grades 3-8) content for middle schoolers.

I am scheduling BrainPOP Homeschool assignments and activities to match the units and topics we are already covering in our other curriculums this year.  Instead of searching the internet for activities to add, I can find everything I need in one easy place, which keeps it simple for both me and my students.

Setting up BrainPOP for Homeschool Assignments

In my teacher account I can create individual accounts for each of my students.  When they log in to watch videos for fun I can track what they are watching and doing in the BrainPOP Homeschool Combo (grades K-8) platform.  I can also create assignments based on our other learning plans and give them assignments to do.  In addition to assigning videos for them to watch, there are a variety of other types of activities I can assign to them related to the video content and concepts, including:

  • Quizzes, both graded and non-graded
  • Challenges
  • Make-A-Map
  • GameUp
  • Printable Worksheets
  • Vocabulary
  • Related Reading
  • Graphic Organizer
  • Creative Coding
  • Make-A-Movie

Watch this video as I show you how easy homeschooling online can be with the BrainPOP Homeschool Teacher Dashboard.

BrainPOP Student Accounts

When my students log in to their BrainPOP student accounts, they can choose what they watch.  With the BrainPOP Homeschool Combo membership, all of my kids can access both the BrainPOP Jr and BrainPOP content.  They can browse videos and activities by topics or watch the suggested video of the day.

When I assign them content, they can see the assignments when they visit their dashboard or notifications in the menu across the top of the website. I can also track their progress on my teacher account from my computer.

BrainPOP for Outside the box kids

For kids who love to learn on screens the variety of extension activities for each video makes it a great place to extend their learning and sneak in other school activities like reading practice with the Extended reading activities or vocabulary practice.  They can also show what they learned from the videos in other creative ways besides writing reports, by using the Make-a-Movie or Creative Coding activities.

I’ve had my eye on BrainPOP for years and love the quality educational content.  For Outside the Box Kids its a great fit because they can navigate around the site to topics that interest them and learn in a safe and protected online environment.  They can satisfy their need to learn while giving me the peace of mind of where they are getting their information.
