Teaching Poetry to our children: the idea sounds picturesque, high society, serene and intimidating. The reality I have found is that it’s simple, fun and easy. Last year, we started including it because it was part of our curriculum from Sonlight.
Not everyone has the luxury of researching teaching methods or fine tuning a mission statement before the teaching starts, but finding time to read a few books along the way can be a great way to find your own style and confidence as a homeschool teacher.
Recent national events and our American History studies have led us to have many discussions about race, segregation and slavery with our kids. We hadn’t started teaching our kids about racism much because I wanted them to have the historical context for the complexities around race in America.
They want to know the “why” of everything, which can lead the family to some interesting discussions. Recently, it led us down a brand new trail for our science after a trip to Space Center Houston.
We are starting our 6th year of homeschooling this fall with 5th grade, 4th grade and 1st grade. Our theme this year will be Medieval history. I can’t believe its year 6 already, in so many ways I am still learning as I go.
