The Homeschool Coding Teacher You Will Love
Last year my oldest and youngest were on a robotics team together. My youngest didn’t get a chance to learn to code because the team was focused on getting it right instead of teaching each other. My 9 year old helped the team in other ways and still wanted to learn to code, so I’m actively looking for programming opportunities and classes for him outside of the robotic competitions.

When I heard about Eureka Champs Online Coding Classes it sounded like a great opportunity to build his skills. The online coding classes were easy to schedule and we could pick a time right away that worked for us. The classes have a maximum of four students and, in his trial class, he was the only student! When I signed him up it asked what his coding experience was so he could be placed in the right class and give the teacher some knowledge to start with. He got one-on-one support from the coding teacher right at the level he was at.

I was really impressed at how the Eureka Champs coding teacher used the screen share and shared controls to guide my student through installing Minecraft Education so they could complete activities later in the session. My student loves Minecraft so it was an exciting thing to look forward to while they did other activities.

Peek in on this example class of a student working with their Eureka Champs Coding Teacher to build in MInecraft. (not my student)
The class started with using Tynker for some activities to learn about using loops to write concise code. My student knew the steps to complete the task but didn’t think about repeating a series of tasks in a loop. The coding teacher was able to guide him to step back and think about working smarter not harder. I really liked how they redirected him and built his skills in a new direction.
I liked that the class used existing Programming platforms instead of something specific to their classes because it is something we can use on our own between classes to practice and he can explore on his own outside of the class time.

I consider myself a techie mom but I don’t have the time to walk with my student through the different activities on Tynker. I’m glad they can go to these Eureka Champ classes and have a professional give them the structured learning that they need to grow their programming skills in a fun environment.
Coding for Kids in Minecraft
The last activity he coded with his teacher was in the Minecraft Education platform. He coded a modification to the game to make it rain creatures from the sky. What 9 year old kid doesn’t think raining cows is the silliest thing ever? He thought it was great that he made it happen himself using coding skills he learned in class! I could hear the excitement from the next room as we watched his code come to life in such a fun way.
