Being your kids’ primary teacher can be overwhelming when you look at all the subject areas and knowledge there is that needs to be imparted to your kids.  Math, Reading and Writing can be pretty easy once you find a good program that fits. But what about the other subjects?  What about the talent  subjects like art and music.  I can’t teach my student to play an instrument if I don’t know how to play it myself.  How do you include fine art in your homeschool?

I’ve got three ways you can teach art in homeschool even without being an artist yourself.  There is more to art besides doing it, which helps a lot! There are people around you who can help, and let’s not forget about online resources as well!

#1. Read About Art in your Homeschool

The first way we included art in homeschool was by reading about it.  Art appreciation begins with being exposed to it, and that is easy to do with great books. When it was a challenge to hold everyone’s attention for an art project we read books and looked at lots of pictures.

One of my favorite books is Vincent’s Starry Night which gives a narrative about each artwork included in the book.  We read one each week and everyone learned about different styles and pieces and followed history as well.

We also really love the World’s Greatest Artist Series by Mike Vanezia.  The books are simple enough for younger students, but my middle schoolers still enjoyed the humor included that made each artist’s story interesting and engaging.

#2 Write about Art

Use art as an inspiration for other school work, including handwriting practice.  Getting artworks in front our students’ eyes helps them to appreciate and recognize different art forms and develop personal connections to the works.

Use artworks for writing prompts to practice writing composition or use art trivia to practice dictation or handwriting.  Seeing art intersect across their different school work will help grow their appreciation and knowledge.

#3 Seek Local Art Resources

Another way to find homeschool art lessons is to look for local resources.  Art classes is one thing our park district teaches or you may find a local art studio that offers classes in specific mediums for students.

Art Museums are also a great resource. They often offer special events or classes that help student grow in their appreciation and skills related to the museum collection or special exhibits.

Ask around your co-op or local mom’s groups to see if there is a more talented parent willing to share their talent and teach homeschool art lessons or swap teaching duties to help your child develop a love of the arts.

One year I teamed up with another mom to teach art together, I read to the kids about the artist and did a lapbook activity and she led the often messy art project! Everybody won! The kids learned about art and I didn’t have to do the mess (messy homeschool projects is one thing that THIS homeschool Mom is NOT into!).
